Kālā with Me
An activity book about money!
This activity book is intended to introduce different money interactions to children in a digestible way. It's loaded with broken-down concepts through coloring, comics, and cultural scenarios.

Using owls native to Hawaii as our characters, we share the young owls' journey in learning about why money is so important. The wise pueo (owl) uses relatable metaphors to connect concepts such as goods and services.

We introduce important concepts such as budgeting, debt, and saving for long-term goals. The activities range from simple coloring to complex ideas such as having to pay interest.

We wanted to continue emphasizing Hawaiian culture whenever possible. So, we elected to create our glossary with ʻŌlelo, the Hawaiian language.

Challenges we had in this book design were in ensuring the content was both useful and understandable. Each page needed to serve a purpose and provide some level of delight when approached.
The finished product is distributed through Kaua‘i Federal Credit Union when a child opens their first savings account.
My role includes, but is not limited to content design, storyboarding, illustration, copywriting, layout design, proofreading, and activity design.
